FAQ
- I really want to participate, but can’t host. Can I join a screening? These are all private screenings. So you have to know a host if you aren’t hosting... But maybe reach out on social media and see if a host wants to invite you :) Also note, SGEFF has traditional film screenings of other films at ArtScience Museum if you want to join one of those.
- What is a crowd-based film festival? It’s a film festival where People (the Crowd) host private screenings of the documentaries with family and friends. This is instead of hosting films at cinemas (though SGEFF does have those as well!)
- What makes a crowd-based film festival effective? We all want a sustainable future, however, we often don’t talk about sustainability with our friends and family. This is a great way to have fun with your family and friends where these important conversations can naturally happen! Documentaries are great for inspiration, Through hosting, you can motivate others, and help transform our future! Also, AS A HOST this way you get to keep a FREE copy of the film for the future - something you wouldn’t get at a theatre!
- Where do I host it / What if I can’t host in my home? Ideally you would host in your home. If you don’t have suitable TV or space, you could rent a media room at a library, a karaoke room or gaming room or any other private space.
- How many people should I invite? Ideally you want to keep it small enough that everyone can discuss the film afterwards. We think the best is about 6 or so, but if you do have more, you could divide people into smaller groups for discussion after. Remember, this should be in your home / private venue - not in cinemas or halls.
- What do I need to host a screening? To be sustainable, you will be provided with either a digital download or a streaming link, depending on the documentary you choose. You simply need to make sure you can display that on your TV. No physical DVDs will be provided.
- What else will I get besides the free documentary? As a host you will receive a digital guide that helps you plan your event and lead post-film discussions.
- Any suggestions for making it the best night ever? You could make it part of a potluck, dinner party, game night, karaoke night, club night etc!
- Are there any legalities or permits? Nope. You are using the film for private use - just like any other movie you buy - so nothing special is needed. All documentaries are legally obtained.
- Can I host a large screening for the public instead? Sorry we cannot help with this as public viewing requires permits and licenses. The version of the films we provide are licensed for private use only. Just because we can’t help though, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it :) We’d happily spread the word if you organised it!
